Harry Pottermania

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Find out your Harry Potter personality at LiquidGeneration!

To start up my HPmania I thought I would also participate in the test Patrick did. It’s really weird how overwhelmed with everything Potter right now. I feel rather free to mention it because I’m pretty sure my friend Bianca doesn’t read this…

section deleted because judith called me to let me know I emailed bianca with a link on this site. Omg I hope she didn’t see anything

I really loved the movie… I think. I’ve seen it twice now, once in 3D IMAX and once normal, and although really like it I’m not completly convinced it was great. I think I’m just too disapointed with the way the death of Sirius was treated, it was really anti-climatic. On the other hand, I’m thrilled we have confirmation that Bellatrix killed Sirius with an AV and he then flew into the veil. That was how I had always interpreted the jet of green light that Bellatrix throws at Sirius in the book, but looking at the way people are discussing that online I seem to have been the only one to think so.

Now friday night I’m going to the bookstore at around 6pm with Debbie, dressed up, and more friends will come and join us along with my brother and a friend of his. I hope it will be a neat evening and that nothing untowards (aka spoiler demons) will happen. I’m also looking forward to seeing the local lizard association, if they come again like they did 2 years ago. I’m looking forward to it mainly because Judith is terrified of snakes and she will be there :) Hehehe. After we get our copies I’m going to spend the night with 3 friends and read a little before going to bed. I wish so much that I was back in Scotland like at the release of Order of the Phoenix and once again wage a speed reading war with Ulrica, it was really my favourite release so far. Because I read so much faster than my less bilingual friends I have set up a plan for the night : We’ll all read the first chapter, wait until everyone’s finished and then discuss it a little before starting the next chapter… lather, rinse, repeat… until they get sick of it and I am out of patience or until it gets to 3:30am. We have to sleep some because the next day we’re going to help to cord wood and that requires energy!

In the meantime… I am not listening to anything Debbie says since she msm me on my cell this morning that she had already read the whole book on the internet *sigh* and I just finished a “Trust Snape” armband while wondering if I will wear it with pride after having read the book or burn it in anger if he turns up to be a badass…

Only time will tell!

well… I’ll get my steroids I guess

Friday, June 1st, 2007

I went to give blood and the lady heard me cough once and saw that I have asthma, she told me I wouldn’t give today especially since I had low blood pressure last time and almost fainted. I’m SO bummed.  Once again, there are tons of people who can actually give blood and they don’t. I try, I go out of my way at the other end of the city and they refuse me. Now I suppose it will be a good reason for me to go see the doctor so that I get a new prescription for my flovent/ventolin so that I finally get over the nagging cough since new york… I wish those prescriptions were valid for life. I mean it’s not like I’ll ever stop having asthma.

Also, I went to see Waitress and it was pretty cute and nice without being too much of  agirly movie, but I fear I am developping a major soft spot for Nathan Filion. I should definitly, finally watch Firefly and Serenity if only for him.

Mr Darcy meets Leonidas

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Technically, I’m not finished with Price and Prejudice yet but I’m sure I’ve seen enough to make fun of it. Because, yes, I find the story really ridiculous. I know it’s an uber-classic and everything, but here I know my friend Bianca will never read so I can say what I think without fear of being dismembered, tortured and disherited. There must have been a huge shortage of cute british cuties for a whole era of women to get all hot and bothered just thinking about Mr Darcy and his cold charming English ways. He doesn’t reach the knee of Michael Sapieha’s Capitaine Chase or even the ankle of Alan Rickman’s Col. Christopher Brandon. Poor Mr. Darcy has no depth at all, he just plays an insufferable emo kid in the wrong century. I’m sure he would have had a myspace page if the internet existed in Victorian England. Thankfully for my sanity, the teleserie itself is not half that bad. The mother of the 5 daughters is hilarious and had me and my mom choking out water a couple of times, and most of the secondary characters are brilliantly played. I even have a rather soft spot for the 2nd heroine who makes me cry inside whenever I see how desolate but stoic she is. So far, I listened to the first 3 episodes out of 6, I got through the first demand in marriage and seeing how that one went through, it was enjoyable even though I could’t make out all they were saying (Old English = I need subs, but the dvd has none… woe be upon me!) More criticism whenever I watch the second part!

(litterally weeks later)

I finally watched the second half of the miniserie and… I’m still so-so about it. First, Elizabeth falls in love with Mr Darcy when she sees his Mansion! Talk about material girl, honestly. And Secondly, after the much overhyped event of Mr Darcy in a wet shirt, I expected to see something more interesting than a wet dog look. So, although it was inteligent and well acted, I actually prefer the Bollywood version. And as for Mr Darcy, if I ever feel like watching a movie with sexy men in it, I will definitly skip it in favour of 300, which was visually wonderful even if the story was so predictable, obvious and shallow. I can’t help it, it’s got David Wenham in it which is almost as good as Christian Bale.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

Last Friday The Friday before last, I went to see Blood Diamond with Judith at the Taschereau Cinema (yay for free tickets!) and I really liked it. It was a very good story, played by terrific actors who kept me in my seat and the story really made me think. I thought it was really interesting how the story takes place a few years ago. There is a brief flash of the Monica-gate, and thus the story appears to be very close to the present, which makes it very actual, and also old enough to get a reliable archive appearance. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t cover all the horrible actions that can happen during civil war, especially when so much money is at stake. One part f the movie really shocked me, they described how the big diamond companies stock the diamonds to create a rarity in order to sell the rocks for much more money. It makes sense and it’s horrible enough to be true in the wild capitalism of today.

I hate it because I want diamonds too. I don’t want to be a part of the system and pay for those big companies. But they’re soooo pretty. I’ve been dreaming of my perfect diamond ring and draw sketches of it for about 5 years now : a silver ring that looks like twigs around the fingers with very minuscules diamonds hidden in the bark like small mushrooms. It was just so weird to see the movie and discuss engagement rings with Mike in the same week. I think I showed him a really pretty one from Birks. It’s really special because it has a small Sapphire on the side. Looking at the price though (and those are the really affordable ones) I think I will enjoy my laptop much more… for the time being. When I get a real good reliable job, I’ll splurge a little and get a pretty right-hand ring. Now I’ll definitely demand to have Canadian diamonds. I’m sure it will not come from warring countries and I will fund my own country’s economy

Cinematic weekend

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

This weekend I went to watch a movie with best friend Judith. We decided to go see The Departed and it was absolutly awesome. I love movies that make me feel like I’m not getting everything, where things have to be deducted later on. Especially when the director doesn’t make things obvious and you feel you understand the characters’ actions and what the consequences are only a few seconds before it is shown in the movie. Of course I will never be on a par with my brother. He guesses the climax of movies approximatly 3 minutes into it. He actually guessed that Neo would die and be reborn into the Matrix about 20 minutes in. It’s really difficult to tell him about good movies because since he is so good at guessing the ending I can practically not say anything to convince him to go see a movie. This afternoon he feels I told him the punch when I mentioned that I was surprised at the end at how much the two moles managed to go through amidst the numerous double-double-double crossing. Is that so obvious?
I really liked the movie but the trailers also provided amazing entertainment. The first image of the trailer for 300 and I was transfixed. This image shut me mid-word. The trailer wshed over me until I saw “Frank Miller” ahhhh! that explains everything then! Another masterpiece of visual is coming soon. I saw the title at the end and realized it was one of the trailers on the apple website that I had never clicked because the title meant nothing and the image was that of red drops of blood. I dismissed it. I thought it was yet another horror crap movies like the massacre of whatever XIIVCIX or something. And then I realized (yes I’m blonde) that it was the story of the 300 greek warriors who had faced the Persian army. I squeed and called everyone I know :)

And finally, I watched the Little Mermaid in its new kick ass dvd remastered state and I am terribly happy to tell everyone that the french version is the Québec version and not the horrible France french dubbing! Hooray!

P.S. I was thinking of making a Elizabethtown-Kirsten Dunst hat with my red cashmere.. yummy beret!
